Dr. Nsikak Umoh is the director and doctor/surgeon who sees patients daily for colon and rectal cancer at The Texas Colon and Pilonidal Clinic in The Woodlands & Cypress, TX.

Our esteemed doctor is highly skilled, experienced, double board-certified in colon and rectal cancer, and devoted to cancer research, presenting his findings to the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons and the World Cancer Congress.

His expertise is in the management and treatment of colon and rectal cancers (benign and malignant) of the small bowel, rectum, and anus. Our doctor is here today to discuss colon and rectal cancer.

Colon and Rectal Cancer

Colon and rectal cancer can affect different organs, such as the rectum, which is near your bladder, uterus, and vagina. In men, the rectum is close to the prostate. Both colon and rectal cancer present many of the same symptoms, such as,

  • Stomach pains
  • Gas pains
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Red-tinged stools
  • Increased weakness
  • Tired

The Texas Colon and Pilonidal Clinic in The Woodlands & Cypress, TX, says that if you have never had a colonoscopy to rule out colon or rectal cancer, never fear as you are asleep during the procedure. This procedure is the best cancer-preventative screening you can do. You feel nothing before, during, or after the procedure.

A colonoscopy is a preventive screening that helps catch colon and rectal cancers early or identify possible pre-cancerous colon tissue. Colon polyps are considered pre-cancerous lesions that can turn into cancer. The only way to see if you have colon polyps is to have a colonoscopy, as recommended by our doctor.

Our doctor uses a long, flexible tube with a camera and light on the end to insert through the anus and up into the intestinal tract.

If he sees suspicious areas, he takes a tissue sample for biopsies. If our doctor sees colon polyps, he removes them and sends them to the lab to determine whether they are benign or malignant. Most colon polyps are non-cancerous.

If, by chance, you have colon cancer, the doctor may remove that section of your colon, called a colon resection, and reattach the two sections together. Depending on the type and stage of cancer, our doctor may have to give you a colostomy, either temporary or permanent.
